Report 2022

Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia and the Philippines are back in business

After a two-year hiatus, IT&CMA was once again a physical exhibition. However, with - logically - fewer exhibitors and fewer buyers. Nevertheless, 325 exhibitors were still present to provide update information to the 387 hosted buyers. And not to forget: 64 media representatives.

Thailand with co-organizer Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), however, was prominently present and naturally with the largest stand. Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Jakarta and, to a lesser extent, Japan were also strong players.

TCEB, Taiwan, the Philippines and Korea (with the new destinations Incheon and Gyeonggi) provided extensive brand presentations. And with Monaco as a striking newcomer. After all, the mini-state is a popular destination for Asians and wants to profile itself even more strongly as a MICE destination on the Asian market.

Thai Airways International was and still is the official carrier for IT&CMA, but was unable to fulfill that role this year for obvious reasons. Due to the forced sale of half of the fleet (from 82 to 41 aircraft), a number of destinations were lost and the number of routes is currently limited to 31. Destinations such as Brussels and Oslo were sacrificed. But according to Pornsri Chotiwit, head of sales agencies, there is a good chance that flights to Brussels as the seat of the EU and NATO will resume next year. Subsidiary Thai Smile remains an important player on the domestic and regional market with 20 aircraft.

Given current figures, TCEB expects to close at 6.13 million MICE travelers by the end of September (at the end of this fiscal year). With some major events as eye-catchers: the Global Summit of Women (June 2022), the Unicity Global Conference and the PATA Destination Marketing Forum (August) The key word for the policy to be followed for the next 5 years is sustainability. And all with the new brand slogan "Thailand MICE - Meet the Magic"

As always, a number of seminars and conferences were scheduled for this IT&CMA-CTW. TCEB President Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya was the guest speaker during the opening keynote, which was followed by a panel discussion with Karen Yue (TTG)n Max Boontawee Jantasuwan (SITE Thailand), Supanich Thiansing (TCEB) and Waikin Wong (ICCA Asia Pacific). A first MICE seminar dealt with the organizational changes and its impact on talent management. With Waikin Wong (ICCA) and Kate Sarasin (Kasetsart University). A second seminar was hosted by the International Association of Professional Congress Organizers (IAPCO). Mathias Posch (president & chairman, International Conference Services) took a closer look at the current challenges facing the MICE sector. Such as the consequences of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the reduced interest in Ukraine's neighboring countries, the tensions between China and Taiwan, the military coup in Myanmar, the COVID restrictions in China, the expensive plane tickets. For example, a conference planned in Prague has been canceled because the congress center was occupied by refugees. After the COVID pandemic, there is also a lack of professional staff. And finally the choice between physical or online or hybrid meetings and conferences.

Two conferences were scheduled as part of Corporate Travel World (CTW). A first with the theme Vision of Value in Business Travel and a second with the theme Walking on the Sustainability Talk.

IT&CMA and CTW 2023 will take place from September 26 to 28 at the Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.
